DePaul Launches New Chinese Studies Major
April 2, 2007
DePaul has created yet another way for students to enhance their understanding of many cultures with the launch of a new Chinese Studies major in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Students in the program can now receive Mandarin language training and learn the history, politics, religions, arts and culture of China.
To celebrate the new program, DePaul hosted a reception that attracted Chinese and university dignitaries. Among those in attendance were the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., president; J.D. Bindenagel, vice president for Community, Government and International Affairs; and Professor Xiaoxiang “Frank” Li, dean of Foreign Languages at Southeast University (Nanjing). Li attended as a special guest of the Modern Language Department because he arranged the exchange that brings a visiting professor of Chinese to DePaul each year. Last year’s visiting professor from Southeast was Xu “Helen” Hou; this year it’s Tian-long Chang.
Also in attendance were DePaul faculty, staff and students, the Chinese Consul General, the China Committee of Chicago Sister Cities, representatives of the Chicago Public Schools, members of the Chinese business community in Chicago and representatives of banks and other entities that do business in China.
